Beers, Beards, Books - Review - Issac and the Egg

Issac and the Egg is simply a brilliant book. It’s raw, heartbreaking and hilarious in equal measure. A review by Chris Hooley & The WCCS.

Fans of ET and It’s a Wonderful Life will adore this novel, as Egg, the strange creature from another planet (literally or figuratively, we are unsure), is the alien/guardian angel mash up of the two classic, feel good, films. Egg is a slapstick genius and caused me to shed a few tears of laugher with his antics throughout the novel, especially the toaster incident!

Issac is a brutally emotional mess throughout the novel and you don’t fully trust him until beyond the half-way mark. Palmer expertly explored the heartbreaking theme of death and the sudden brutality of it without patronising or being too much.

There is a huge twist in this novel and I really enjoyed it when it happened as it changed the whole dynamic of the book. It’s very rare for a novel to hit that magic note where everything you read before that ‘big reveal moment’ suddenly changes, but Issac and the Egg does it and it definitely makes the novel better.

The comedic elements of this novel really make it shine and show that lightness in the darkest of places is possible.

Brilliant debut from Bobby Palmer - I’m keen to read more of his work as he has an exceptional talent for capturing and showcasing human emotion in ways most authors can only dream about.

Five stars! I’d love a sequel too… come on, Bobby. Toy Story three worked. Let’s ignore two, shall we?
